In a city incessantly seeped in the claustrophobic morass of urbanization degraded by its own greed for quick money and self-serving sycophancy one small group of advertent individuals stands like a beacon, giving immense hope to its denizens. Sounds absolutely melodramatic, and poetic even, right? But this is necessarily what the Society for Preservation of Environment and Quality of Life has set out to do.
Housed in a non-descript little rat-hole of an office, with much more than its share of rickety chairs and dusty files, the Society concerns itself with the creation of necessary awareness among the citizens to protect the natural environment in a sustainable manner. They conduct many seminars and activities to improve our efficiency of utilization of natural resources in the city. And they've done everything from mass tree plantation drives to Public Interest Litigations in courts challenging illegal constructions, in an effort to maintain the quality of life.
The Society was started in 1988 by a group of like-minded people from various walks of life, each providing his or her expertise in some particular field to help the vision along. Everyone from environmental scientists to engineers and doctors to volunteering teenagers form a part of this distinguished group. It is also consulted very frequently by government agencies during the policy-making process.
SPEQL forms our first line of defense in a city that is fast coming to be an example of John Milton's Pandemonium the capital of Hell.
