BackgroundThis orphanage run by the Missionaries Of Charity is part of an international network of institutions for the sick and destitute. Until 2001, girl children between the ages of 4 and 24 were kept here and regularly adopted by families.
Since the child-trade racket was busted in 2001, the government has forbidden private institutions from giving children for up adoption. This leaves the Missionaries Of Charity with very few options, and they can no longer afford to take in new children since they survive solely on donations.
ActivitiesThe orphanage currently (in June 2005) has about 20 girls, the oldest of whom is 22 and soon to be married. The others are still in school. Some children are physically or mentally disabled, and attend the
Sweekaar Upkaar School For The Handicapped. The girls are self-sufficient and take care of all their day-to-day activities themselves.
Membership And Volunteer OpportunitiesThe best way to aid the Missionaries would be to help them regain their adoption license. But if that is not within your power, you could go the orphanage and spend some time playing with the children there. You could also donate old clothes or books to the orphanage. Donations are welcome through cash or cheques made out to "Missionaries Of Charity".
