Sri Kuchipudi Nritya Nilayam

If it is tradition and long-standing repute you're after, Kuchipudi Nritya Nilayam is just the place. Set up in 1962 when most of the current gurus were not even born, the Nilayam is the legacy of a family that has made it its mission to impart its knowledge and to see dance flourish.

The school was the first to be recognized by the Government of AP, but the recognition brought only a plaque, no shower of gold coins. Classes, therefore, are conducted within the modest home itself. The school currently has only about 15 to 20 hand-picked students, since only serious students are entertained. Notably, male students are common in this dance school, although they are a rarity in others.

Both Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam are taught at the Nilayam. Despite the space constraint, the students' interest and inspiration seem to carry them through. Even students preparing for their plus-2 examinations and EAMCET seem enthusiastic about continuing with dance. Some students have even begun to teach dance on their own. And thus, the founders' vision of a flourishing Kuchipudi tradition is being kept alive within these vivacious youngsters.
