Background The THP Institute was established in 1968 by Thakur Hari Prasad, whose oldest son was mentally handicapped. Since then, the institute has established itself as one of the premier institutions of care for the mentally disabled.
The THPI operates like a school, with the academic year beginning in June. Apart from having won international laurels for the quality of its teaching and its management facilities, the institute has also managed to set up a highly successful and lucrative industry producing and selling greeting cards.
Activities Care of the mentally-handicapped at the THP Institute occurs in three steps: diagnosis, planning and implementation. A physician meets every affected person who comes to the institute and diagnoses the extent of the problem. Later, a team of experts decides upon the best course of action for each individual. Finally, the team of Special Education staff translates this plan into action in the classroom.
The institute has discovered that muscle disorders and speech problems are often corrected when students learn vocal and instrumental music. Other skills such as painting and recitation of slokas are also taught here. These supplement the practical classroom teaching as well as the physiotherapy sessions. Emphasis is laid on vocational training and on providing gainful employment.
Several of the students of the institute are very creative and skilled in the fine arts. Their talents have been harnessed to create a booming greeting cards industry, the proceeds of which fund the institute's activities. Several companies order THPI greeting cards in bulk on occasions such as the New Year, claiming that the cards are unique in a market dominated by standard names such as Archie's and Hallmark.
Membership and Volunteer Opportunities Several volunteer opportunities are available in the institute, depending on the volunteer's field of interest and ability. The institute welcomes the involvement of the community. More information can be obtained on the website at: http://www.thakurhariprasad.org/contribution.htm
