The Indira Gandhi National Open University was established in 1985 to democratise higher education, and now has hundreds of study centers across the country where more than 11 lakh students of all ages take the programs. All-India Radio, Doordarshan, typed material and AV tools are used in the learning centers as methods of imparting knowledge. Now IGNOU has branched out, and is lending support to students in 19 Commonwealth, Gulf and African countries, offering scholarships to meritorious students as well.
