Every local rock band from town rocks. So does this one. We shall take it really slow and not burst out into uncontrollable laughter when they say that the favorite band of the guy who composes music for this band is Limp Bizkit.
So Gnarl predominantly is a nu-age, nu metal band. Though this genre of music is looked down upon by the purist metal community which is particularly hostile, it sells the maximum number of CDs. This theory proves well even with this band, which has already cut a record (self-titled) with Sony, which would be out in August this year, and is in studio already for its second album. Gnarl is only the second band from the city, after
Sledge, to cut its own album.
The band is lead by Tamar Chatterjee, who does the vocals and lead guitar duties. He's come off a couple of nu-metal bands like Distortion and Onslaught, to settle down with Gnarl. The drumming, which sometimes takes a death metal turn, is brought on by the best member of the band, Solomon (previously in
Blood Maze). Bass is rendered by Vikram, who was a manager with Tamar's previous bands.
These guys deserve respect for the simple fact that they refuse to play covers, and happen to be the first band from the city to gouge out airtime on MTV and VH1. Their first video is called When.
The music is like a potboiler ? a bit of everything, and purely commercial. They idolize System Of A Down, Limp Bizkit and Sepultura. If you think you'll like a band with these influences, try Gnarl.
