Background
Did you spend all math classes in school exploring the intricacies of modern art? Did the sight of your math teacher make you call upon all the divine forces of nature? On an average, 10%-15% of children in primary classes suffer either from dyslexia (difficulty in reading, spelling, writing or arithmetic - alone or in combination) or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder). Help Child is a voluntary non-profit organization that was set up in 1994 to help children with learning difficulties.

Activities
Help Child is the only center in AP dealing with learning disabilities for children that fall within 3-1/2 to 18 years of age. You could visit the center with prior appointment from Laxmi Narasimhan.

The centre is professionally run by well qualified faculty comprising a child psychologist, a speech pathologist, a psycho-neuro linguist, a special educator, a counselling psychologist and a neurologist. Some of the core objectives of the center are to teach children with learning disabilities, create an interest in them in learning, develop their cognitive skills, enhance their speech development, carry out a psychological assessment and help the kids develop proper study habits.

Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer opportunities are open to those with a relevant background. Any cash donations made to the organization are exempt under Sec. 80G of the Income Tax Act.

Visiting the center is an interesting experience - you will probably encounter some hyperactive children running about, or some shifting about restlessly in their seat while they await their turn. A therapist talks patiently to a child, urging him to read the flash cards placed in front of him; and a couple of older children are being taught innovative techniques in arithmetic.

The most commendable aspect of the center is that these children get the undivided attention of the therapist, and are treated as normal thinking individuals. A far cry from the "dunce" treatment you get when you're the only one in math class who comes up with a different answer each time you try a problem.
