BackgroundFounded in 1998 by K S Madhavan, the A M Charitable Trust offers an alternative to the thousands of cancer patients in Hyderabad who are willing to look beyond the entrenched allopathic system of medicine. The debilitating impact of conventional procedures such as chemotherapy has left some patients' bodies unable to recover at normal pace. For others, this is irrelevant - allopathic treatment is simply too expensive.
So combining the best of conventional medical practices with relatively inexpensive methods such as homoeopathy, ayurveda, naturopathy and yoga, the Trust is attempting to provide therapy to cancer patients across the socio-economic spectrum.
ActivitiesThe Trust has tied up with most of the major hospitals in the city to identify and advice cancer patients. Homoeopathic and ayurvedic medicines are distributed through their clinic at Uttaradhi Mutt (Kachiguda), while regular yoga and nutrition therapy classes are conducted at
NIMS. Doctors on the Board of Trustees provide counselling services to help patients customize their treatment for best results. The Trust also attempts to improve the general awareness of the benefits of alternative cures for cancer, through regular camps and press releases.
The Trust admits that these alternative therapies have not been fully validated yet. Several of their case studies aim to establish beyond doubt that unorthodox treatments can, one day, prove to be effective substitutes to allopathy.
All services are provided free of cost. Almost 70% of the monetary needs of the Trust are taken care of by Madhavan, while the remaining comes from donations.
Membership and Volunteer OpportunitiesFew volunteers are needed, and when they are, professional social workers employed by the
National Institute of Nutrition are called for. These workers act as counselors for the patients and their families.
If you are a qualified professional in the field of oncology, or have prior experience dealing with cancer patients, you could offer your services to the Trust by contacting Dr. Nagalakshmi at the phone numbers given above. Cash donations can be made by cheque/DD in favor of "The AM Charitable Trust" and mailed to their office.
